EX480 is retired — EX432 is what you sit instead

If you’re planning multicluster OpenShift certification, the exam most guidance still points at no longer exists.

EX480 — Red Hat Certified Specialist in MultiCluster Management — is retired. Red Hat’s own exam page carries the retirement in its title. Retirements like this arrive without much fanfare, which is why it’s worth checking the exam page yourself before you book anything.

First: nothing you already hold is affected

If you passed EX480, you still hold the certification and it still counts toward Red Hat Certified Architect. Retirement means you can’t sit it any more. Nothing is revoked.

What replaces it

EX432 — Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Advanced Cluster Management.

• Four hours, performance-based
• Built on OpenShift Container Platform 4.18 and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management 2.13

The objectives moved, so treat this as a new exam rather than a rename.

What EX432 covers

• Manage and deploy RHACM; understand architecture and components
• Create, upgrade, import, remove and scale clusters
• Configure access control objects including roles, cluster sets, selectors and placement rules
• Deploy and manage policies; configure the Compliance Operator
• Manage the observability service; enable and customise the stack
• Use Kustomize for resource management
• Manage the multi-cluster application lifecycle using GitOps practices
• Manage the Virtualization Operator; deploy and monitor virtual machines across clusters

The addition worth noticing

That last objective is new ground: OpenShift Virtualization, managed across clusters.

Red Hat’s stated audience for EX432 explicitly includes “OpenShift Virtualization Administrators managing multiple clusters at scale” alongside the SRE and cluster-engineer roles you’d expect.

This tracks with what we see in the field. Organisations migrating off traditional hypervisors are landing VMs on OpenShift, and once you have VMs on more than one cluster you have a fleet-management problem that RHACM is the answer to. The certification has followed the workload.

If your multicluster experience is purely container-side, this is the objective to build a lab for. It’s the one most likely to be unfamiliar rather than merely rusty.

Recommended preparation

Red Hat lists four courses or equivalent experience:

• DO280 — OpenShift Administration II: Operating a Production Kubernetes Cluster
• DO380 — OpenShift Administration III: Scaling Kubernetes Deployments in the Enterprise
• DO316 — Managing Virtual Machines with Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization
• DO432 — Multicluster Management with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes

DO316 on that list is the tell. If your plan was built around DO480 and the old syllabus, you’re missing a course.

Re-planning a budget

If you approved training against EX480 earlier this year, three things need revisiting:

1. The exam code on any purchase order or scheduling request.
2. The course list. DO316 is likely absent from your plan.
3. The lab requirements. RHACM 2.13 plus OpenShift Virtualization is a heavier environment than the old multicluster lab. Check what your people can run before you assume they can practise at home.

Should you sit it at all?

Multicluster management is a real specialism rather than a resume line. The test we’d apply: do you operate more than one production cluster today, or will you within the next six months?

If yes, EX432 maps closely to work you’re already doing and the certification will stick. If no, you’ll study fleet management, pass, and forget it — and the same money spent on EX380 would have made you materially better at the cluster you do run.
