The Red Hat OpenShift certification path in 2026

What each OpenShift exam tests, which ones stack toward RHCA, and the one retirement that catches people out when they plan a route through them.

Facts checked 7 August 2026 against the vendor's own documentation. Exam codes, curricula and product versions change — verify against the official page before you book anything.

The three rungs, in order
  1. EX280Operate a cluster somebody else built. Entry point.
  2. Six months operatingThe gap between the rungs is scar tissue, not courseware.
  3. EX380Own the platform. Renews EX280 at the same time.
  4. EX432Fleet scale. Only if you actually run more than one cluster.

Most people plan an OpenShift certification route by reading a two-year-old blog post and booking whatever it names. That’s how engineers end up studying for an exam that no longer exists.

What follows is the current shape of the path, checked against Red Hat’s own exam pages rather than reconstructed from memory. Exam codes and product versions do move, so verify against the official page before you book.

The three levels

Red Hat’s OpenShift track is narrower than the Kubernetes ecosystem’s. There are three rungs, and they stack.

EX280 — Red Hat Certified System Administrator in OpenShift. The entry point, based on OpenShift Container Platform 4.18. Performance-based: you sit at a real cluster and perform real tasks, with no multiple-choice questions anywhere in it.

EX380 — Red Hat Certified Advanced System Administrator in OpenShift. The engineer rung, also on 4.18. It assumes EX280-level knowledge and moves into the things that only matter once a cluster carries production traffic: authentication backends, backup and restore, cluster partitioning, GitOps, monitoring and logging.

EX432 — Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Advanced Cluster Management. Fleet scale. Four hours, based on OpenShift 4.18 and Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management 2.13.

Each of these counts toward Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA), which requires several specialist certifications on top of a base credential.

The retirement that catches people out

If you’ve read anything about multicluster OpenShift certification written before this year, it told you to sit EX480 — Red Hat Certified Specialist in MultiCluster Management.

EX480 is retired. Red Hat’s own exam page carries the retirement in its title. The certification you earned from it still counts toward RHCA, so nobody who holds it has lost anything, but you can’t plan a route through it any more.

The current exam covering that ground is EX432, and the objectives moved rather than being renamed. EX432 is built on RHACM 2.13 and adds an area EX480 never covered: managing the Virtualization Operator, and deploying and monitoring virtual machines across clusters. If your organisation is looking at OpenShift Virtualization, that now sits inside the multicluster exam rather than adjacent to it.

We flag this specifically because it’s the failure mode we see most: a training budget approved in Q1 against a curriculum that changed, and an engineer three weeks into studying the wrong syllabus.

What EX280 covers

Red Hat lists the objectives as:

  • Manage OpenShift Container Platform
  • Work with resource manifests
  • Deploy applications
  • Manage authentication and authorization
  • Configure network security
  • Expose non-HTTP/SNI applications
  • Enable developer self-service
  • Manage OpenShift operators
  • Configure application security

Read that list again and notice what’s missing. No cluster installation, no upgrade path, no etcd surgery. EX280 is about operating a cluster somebody else built and handed you. That’s the right scope for the entry rung, but it means passing it doesn’t make you the person who owns the platform.

The audience Red Hat names is broad: system and software architects, system administrators, cluster operators, SREs, DevOps engineers. Recommended preparation is DO180 (Operating a Production Cluster) then DO280 (Configuring a Production Cluster). RHCSA is strongly recommended but not required.

What EX380 adds

EX380’s objectives are where the exam stops being about using OpenShift and starts being about running it:

  • Configure and manage OpenShift authentication and identities
  • Back up and restore applications with OpenShift API for Data Protection (OADP)
  • Manage workloads with cluster partitioning
  • Manage workloads with pod scheduling
  • Implement OpenShift GitOps
  • Manage cluster monitoring and metrics
  • Provision and inspect cluster logging

Backup and restore is the one people underestimate. OADP isn’t conceptually hard, but it has enough moving parts (storage locations, backup schedules, volume snapshots, restore ordering) that it doesn’t reward cramming. Build one, break it, restore from it.

The prerequisite is a current Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration certification or equivalent experience, and Red Hat is explicit that knowledge needs to match DO180 and DO280 for version 4.18 or later. Earlier 4.x releases are called out as insufficient. If you passed EX280 several versions ago, budget refresh time.

Renewal, and the useful shortcut

Red Hat certifications expire, and you renew by re-sitting the exam or by passing a higher-level exam in the same track. Passing EX380 renews your EX280 as a side effect.

That makes moving up cheaper than it looks. If you’re going to pay to renew anyway, paying roughly the same to sit the next rung buys you a new credential and a renewal in one go. The only reason not to is if you won’t use the advanced material, in which case the renewal was arguably not worth it either.

A route that works

If you’re starting from nothing and want to end up credibly running OpenShift in production:

  1. Get comfortable with Linux first. RHCSA isn’t required for EX280, but every hour you spend confused about systemd during an OpenShift exam is an hour you didn’t spend on OpenShift.
  2. DO180 → DO280 → EX280. Don’t skip the labs. The exam is performance-based, and reading about a task is not the same skill as performing it under time pressure.
  3. Run something real for six months. The gap between EX280 and EX380 is mostly operational scar tissue, and courseware doesn’t produce it.
  4. DO380 → EX380. This renews EX280 at the same time.
  5. EX432 only if you run fleets. Multicluster management is a genuine specialism. If you run one cluster, this certification won’t help you and you’ll forget it.

Where certifications stop helping

We train teams on this material and we still tell clients the same thing: a certification proves you could do the tasks on the day, in a clean lab, with no incident channel open.

It says nothing about whether you can debug a cluster at 3am when the thing that broke isn’t on any syllabus. That comes from operating one. Use the certifications to structure your learning and to prove a baseline to a procurement department, both of which are real and legitimate uses, but don’t mistake the credential for the capability.
